Insurgents Flee, Abandon Gun Trucks After Failed Ambush The Nigerian Army says it has recorded another success in the ongoing onslaught against Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, north-east Nigeria. A statement from the Army Operations Media Coordinator, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, on Tuesday disclosed that the feat was made by troops of 153 Task Force Battalion deployed at New Marte. Colonel Iliyasu explained that the soldiers had embarked on fighting patrol to Dikwa to hunt and destroy remnants of Boko Haram criminals in the area in the early hours of Monday. Incidentally, the troops were said to have encountered an ambush staged against them by the insurgents along the patrol route at Ala Village, some 7km away from New Marte. The big cat which became agitated at the sight of many people was later tranquilised and carried out of its cage. Alleged N11bn Diversion: Court Adjourns Shema’s Trial. The Katsina High Court has adjourned the trial of former Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema, and three others until December 11 and 12. Justice Mai-Kaita Bako adjourned on Tuesday with respect to the statement of the fourth accused person, Mr Lawal Dankaba, which was rejected by the court. Dankaba told the court that all the statements he made since inception of the trial were under duress. The former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the state, Mr Sani Makana; former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Lawal Rufa’I; and former chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Dankaba, are the three others standing trial along with the former governor. Senate To Investigate NEMA Over ‘Selective’ Disaster Response The Senate has directed its Committees on Special Duties, Ecology and Climate Change and Environment to investigate the effectiveness of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) over disaster response in 2019. According to the Special Assistant (Press) to the President of the Senate, Ezrel Tabiowo, the Red Chamber also directed NEMA to immediately implement a response programme for the flood disaster that affected various communities in Demsa, Numa, Guyuk and Lamurde Local Governments of Adamawa State. These were some of the resolutions reached at plenary on Tuesday sequel to the consideration of a motion sponsored by Senator Binos Yaroe (APC, Adamawa South). Senate To Investigate Gencos, Discos Over Unsteady Power Supply The Senate has mandated its Committee on Power to investigate the activities of power generating and distribution companies with the aim of unraveling the causes of unsteady power supply in Nigeria.  The resolution of the Senate followed the consideration of a motion moved by Senator Chukwuka Utazi, who lamented that power generating or installed capacity of Nigeria in relation to its population and Gross Domestic Product cannot ensure that Nigeria competes favourably in terms of development with other nations. The lawmaker while expressing optimism that Nigeria can set a realisable target of generating a capacity of 100,000 megawatts in the next 10 years, said this target can be achieved through a mix of energy sources such as natural gas, hydro, coal, wind and renewable energy.
